Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
