Safety Guidance for Defence Personnel

In a recently aired appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to talk about secret information while riding in China-made vehicles.

The minister explained that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its vehicle pools, but stressed that safety is a concern in every modern cars.

Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
But regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for everyone concerned about security.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: ‘That’s exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”

Wider Security Context

The revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable China to disable buses and cause chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
