In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of significant explosions rocking Tehran, following statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Plumes of Smoke Reported in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in the city on Saturday morning. Correspondingly, two plumes of dense smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of these blasts indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet reported, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Background: Escalating Tensions and Recent Events
This event occurs against a background of sharply increased tensions in the Middle East. Major developments preceding this attack involve:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the region, including the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the United States and Iran on Tehran's nuclear programme concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or confront severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its missiles programme. Officials dismissed claims about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
These developments remains fluid, with additional reports expected as the situation develops.
